Print NW is a large commercial printer located in Tacoma. Owners Jeffery Beardemphl, Ned Witting, Jeff Stallings and Bruce Dammeier—former employees of Print Northwest of Fife, which was purchased in 1999 by Q Media—acquired Valley Press of Puyallup five years ago, and since then have experienced growth of more than 500 percent. In December 2004, they moved Print NW to a 40,000-square-foot facility with easy access to I-5 and have since purchased two new Komori printing presses to keep pace with their growth. The owners credit that growth to their terrific workforce with a blend of experience and energy.
The company recently won AWB’s Environmental Excellence Award for developing a strong company-wide initiative that focuses on both pollution prevention and resource conservation. The company does this thorough assessment and planning with documented follow-through. Print NW’s most recent accomplishments include the reduction or elimination of inks, solvents, wetting agents and films containing volatile organic compounds and other harmful ingredients, and the use of closed-loop wastewater treatment and product reuse, thus reducing discharges into the environment.
Print NW also recently received the Forest Stewardship Council’s Chain of Custody Certification. The FSC’s mission is to promote environmental management of the world’s forests by setting international standards for accountability and accrediting participating pulp providers and mills through independent third-party organizations. The FSC is acknowledged worldwide by environmental organizations as the premier network for promoting responsible forest resource management.
Any product made of wood pulp or paper can be certified as long as the wood used originates from FSC-certified sources. FSC certification helps to eliminate habitat destruction and water pollution that sometimes accompanies logging by encouraging consumers to use wood products produced using environmentally-responsible methods.
As a chain-of-custody-certified printer, Print NW can assure the origin on FSC-approved paper products, allowing them to use FSC-certified logos on appropriate pieces printed in their facility.
